Modern “astroturf” has a granular infill that tends to migrate from areas of heavy footfall to less frequently- used parts of the playing surface, and regular redistribution is needed if the surface is to remain playable and safe. And while artificial turf doesn’t grow, it does get dirty and foreign matter like gum and dog waste can be stubbornly resistant to removal.
